The Wide, Wide World is a work of sentimentalism based on the life of young Ellen Montgomery. The story begins with Ellen’s happy life being disrupted by the fact that her mother is very ill and her father must take her to Europe, requiring Ellen to leave home to live with an almost-unknown aunt. Though Ellen tries to act strong for her mother’s sake, she is devastated and can find solace in nothing.

This is a book I read about 60 yrs ago and I've never forgotten it. My original book is a rare collector's edition and very delicate, so when I saw a Kindle version available I couldn't pass it up. It's about the life of a young girl whose father takes her to Europe to live with a relative she did not know. I believe her mother died. I plan to read it again as I've forgotten much of the story, other than I really enjoyed it so many years ago.Product details

I loved the amount of the Bible used in conversation throughout the book. Delightful and challenging to the soul. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the truth of Christ Jesus and who would not normally read fiction. Be prepared for a lengthy read. This was a pick for our book club that has blessed many, how the Holy Spirit uses all things for our good is so sweet.
I stumbled on this book accidentally while looking for books by Ellen Montgomery, author of the Anne Of Green Gables series. I ordered it and frankly, when I received it, I wondered why I had ordered it and finally remembered my search for Ellen Montgomery books. I love this book! I recommend it to anyone who loves Victorian literature and also, loves the Bible. The language of the age in which it was written is one of my favorites. Those who love Jane Austen my appreciate this book. It is a pleasure to read and I won't be putting it aside to "finish later" as I do with some books. I hope you enjoy it and love it as I do if you decide to purchase it. Happy reading!
I enjoyed the book. It was hard to get into it but over time, I wanted to know what happened next. There really wasn't a true climax nor major twist and turns. It was very linear and steadfast; almost like reading a journal in the third person.
So glad to have read this mild and well-written book. The ending, however, was abrupt. I would have liked a more detailed ending. Otherwise, I loved it.
This is on my list of the 5 most life-changing books I have ever read! If only I had this book in my hands years earlier. This would make a wonderful gift to any teen girl or young woman or passionate woman of any age. This book was read by Jo of Little Women. It is the book she was crying over as she read it up in a tree.
This was a story of a little girl's journey. There were plenty of surprises along the Way.
The customs and language were antiquated and peculiar, but I love the scripture, hymns and
Good lessons learned along the way
A great story, predictable although I wasn't prepared for the abrupt ending. A challenge to read the wording and sentence structure of the time. Characters delightful. Great insight into the raising of children during that time; poor/middle class vs. well to do. Would recommend this story.
